The first is quite possibly only the figment of overactive imagination and folklore. The second is probably the world’s greatest gift to mankind and the only reason we have any record of our past. Writers have recorded and told the very fabric of our lives since the first being made a mark in the sand.

“The writing was a natural progression from an early love of reading and helped maintain some sanity during some difficult years for me. To become a bestseller has been a lifelong ambition, and throughout my travels, I have been fortunate to have collected some interesting tales together.” The first published book, Callahan, brings Dirty Harry back from oblivion to deal with ISIS. The second tale is an interesting account of a brutal triple murder, which coincidentally happened near the writer’s home. “I am also working on a number of tales for my favourite fictional character; Edward Dantès and enjoy his ongoing affair with my own nemesis Her Majesty’s Revenue & Customs.”

Martin Lonergan, a former CEO with a long career in the City of London and international trading. His firm became a member of the London Metal Exchange, where he helped launch the new steel billet contract in 2008. He has extensive international experience working in China, Africa, and Europe. Martin advised the Chinese steel industry on emissions reductions and environmental issues and joined the Chinese government delegation to COP 16 In Cancun. He was later appointed executive director of the Chinese Emissions trading Association.

In 2012, after losing protracted litigation with Deutsche Bank and his business’s ultimate collapse, Total Global Steel, Martin moved to Dubai and wrote several fiction novels. He remained as a consultant in the financial sector for many years. He appears on the FCA register.

Martin Lonergan became a victim of Dubai’s draconian legal process where civil disputes are classified as criminal. After a two-year travel restriction, he was arrested and incarcerated for ten months. He was released when the complainer failed to deliver evidence and was unable to substantiate their allegation. Lonergan was discriminated against in jail, treated inhumanely and starved. He lost over a third of his body weight during his detention and lived through the COVID pandemic in an overcrowded, dilapidated prison, witnessing prisoners dying from the virus.

Upon release in December 2020, Lonergan joined Detained International and is currently working as a full-time writer for the organisation. And will shortly release a book on his own experiences. The Dubai Prison System and Police abused his basic Human Rights and are now subject to an ongoing review by Detained International.

Martin Lonergan wrote his earlier works under a pseudonym, calling himself BigFoot and owns the domain bigfootwriter.com. He stopped writing after a productive three years, between 2013 and 2015. During this time, they were self-published on Amazon, and books are available on the Kindle store. He also used the Amazon print on demand option for paperbacks known initially as CreateSpace. Unable to find an interested publisher, he shelved several projects, and the books, although well-received, suffer from a lack of professional editing.

The Once Upon a Time in Essex was the bestselling book and gave an alternative solution to the infamous Essex Boys Murders in Rettendon during December 1995. There are several books in a series that deal with the systematic attack on the UK’s VAT system using the method today referred to as Carousel Fraud. This cost the UK Exchequer billions in lost revenue and was synonymous with organised crime throughout the EU.

Lonergan has lived a peripatetic life, never remaining for more than a few years in any one country. He is an Irish citizen, having an English mother and an Irish father. The family are historically from Clonmel, where the family name is established.

Lonergan speaks and presents on many subjects from organised crime to financial derivatives. The public speaking appearances are wide and varied. He has entertained audiences from COP 16, the World Bank, the IMF and the New York Stock Exchange, along with many corporate events over the years.

Lonergan is an RFU coach and has toured extensively playing rugby in New Zealand, America, Australia and Italy. His favoured position was the second row. Although only ever an amateur player, he is a great advocate of the sport, and Total Global Steel Sponsored Brentwood Rugby Club for many years.

VAT 1 – The Edward Dantès Story

VAT – The exclusive club for the British Entrepreneur

Edward Dantès, a product of his times and people. The first book is VAT 1, in the tale of a life most strange. It had to start somewhere and perhaps were it not for the bursting of bubbles, then it would never have been enough for even a single book. The principle character, a man of Essex, or an Essex man, is there a difference. It never occurred to Edward Dantès there might be.

The bubble really did burst, and it burst for an entire nation, not just a county. But perhaps it was felt more in Essex than in other places, for the South of England and in particular Essex had benefited from Margaret Thatcher’s dream perhaps more other parts of the Kingdom. For those which rise higher fall further.

Gibraltar & Back

Gibraltar was Ed’s first stop after HMC&E, or un-affectionately referred to as the church by the gang, took gold off the table. Ed and the guys still fancied the gold business could produce something meaningful. The Costa del Sol was the centre of the known universe for the supply of cannabis resin to the UK. The players lived there, met there and partied there. It was a convenient place to meet the Moroccan growers and the sun nearly always shone. The girls and the golf weren’t bad either.

Ed was never in the drug business, nor were any of his immediate associates, or so they would tell you. Perhaps they even believed it. What they were in was the money job. Law enforcement had started to follow the money in the war on drugs. The average Scouser in a shell suit couldn’t walk through Liverpool airport anymore, heading for his easy jet to Malaga, with two hundred grand in his golf bag. It was too risky and inevitably led to questions and confiscation.

Triple Murder in Essex, why and by whom

Dirty Harry Callahan first appeared in 1971; a tough San Francisco Homicide Detective. Harry soon became a liability for the changing face of law enforcement and was sidelined 25 years ago. As a man well past his sell-by date, he takes the job at the Department of State. Harry’s exploits soon get him the dirty job. It was all about deniability for the American President.

Harry would have to break all the rules if he was to find the slightest thread to follow.

New York had been hit once, they would hit it again. This time they would destroy the city forever. Their delivery mechanism was the ultimate act of deception. Who would think it possible, the journey so long and moving so slow. The world’s most advanced security systems failed, with no patterns, nothing to see. They knew it was coming… Little Boy was coming home.

A Swiss Bank & The Job in Spain

The arrest in 1994 brought an abrupt end to a way of life Ed had learned to embrace. He had applied himself completely to the profession, into which circumstance had pushed him. A new character has evolved, with different faces, for different occasions. He had become a member of an international community of criminals.

The bail and travel restrictions put an end to the businesses overseas. Customs had got it wrong this time. There were things going on, but they had missed them. They tried constructing something out of nothing, the defendants must have done something. The evidence wouldn’t fit, they stretched it one way then the next. It was all in vain, the prosecution case collapsed miserably in 1996.

Unable to travel; with no source of income, Ed joins a friends contracting business. It’s honest, regular business. He puts his capital in to bridge the funding gap between salaries and the firm getting paid. Ed applies himself to developing the business with the same enthusiasm he’d given to all he’d done before.
